The Honest Diagnosis

Websites don't really break. They get neglected.

Ask us what kills websites and you’ll get a one-word answer: negligence. WordPress and the plugins underneath it ship new versions constantly — security patches, compatibility fixes, improvements. Skip them for six months and the site gets slow. Skip them for two years and things quietly stop working: a form that no longer sends, a gallery that won’t load on newer phones, a login page being probed by every bot on the internet. The owner is usually the last to find out, because the owner stopped looking at their own website years ago. Everyone does.

WordPress management is the fix: a standing arrangement where keeping your WordPress installation updated, watched, and correct is our problem, not yours — and where your changes get made for you while we’re at it. It’s the least glamorous thing we sell, and the part most clients would miss first.

Every site we build has two layers. The front end — the design, the code, the nerd stuff — is ours to maintain. The back end is yours: fields to fill in, text you can edit like a Word document, photos you can swap without asking anyone. You color within lines we drew during the build, and by virtue of that, the site is effectively unbreakable. Type over the text, add a page, swap a headshot — it comes out looking right every time, because it can’t come out any other way.

Figuring out where the lines go is part of the design process itself: not just for the content you have today, but for the things you’ll predictably add later — the new staff member, the new service, next year’s news. And when something genuinely new comes along that has no field yet — a chart, a whole new kind of page — you don’t wrestle with it. You tell us, and we sort it out.

Here’s the truth about the self-serve layer: most clients use it for a month and then discover that emailing us is faster. We’re built for that. Send the change over — email or text, whatever’s in your hand — and we usually have it done the same day it lands. Most requests take us about ninety seconds of actual work. This is, frankly, our whole shtick: we’ve been doing it forever, and we’re fast.

The arrangement includes an hour of our time every month, and stretched across a year, that covers more updating than most businesses can generate. Anything genuinely bigger than an update — a brand-new page, a new feature — gets named as such up front and done only on your go-ahead. In practice, it’s rare.

The Long Game

Good management starts before launch

The cheapest website update is the one the structure makes for you. Prairie Diagnostic Services runs a catalogue of veterinary tests that changes all the time — so we built their site to import that catalogue automatically and keep it searchable, filterable, and current on its own. Nobody retypes a test. That isn’t a management trick; it’s a design decision made before launch. We build every site with its next five years of edits in mind, which is why our builds don’t need rebuilding for at least half a decade — usually longer.

The updates you'll never have to think about

WordPress core, the plugins, the tools the site is built with — all of it ships new versions on its own schedule. We run updates weekly — or immediately, when a security fix can’t wait — and every update follows the same rule: full site backup first, so an update can never cost you anything. We also run monthly speed and performance checks, and the premium software your site is built on stays licensed on our account — you’ll never get a surprise invoice because a plugin subscription came due.

We take these on case by case: first we look at what you've got and tell you plainly whether it's worth managing or overdue for a rebuild. If it's sound, we help you get control of your own accounts, migrate the site onto our infrastructure, and manage it like one of our own from then on. If it's not, we'll say that too — plainly, with reasons.

FAQ

Three questions everyone asks

How often does WordPress actually need updating?
Constantly — core, plugins, and the server software underneath all release updates on their own schedules. We apply them weekly, or right away when urgency demands it, backup first every time. Letting updates pile up is how WordPress sites end up slow, buggy, or hacked; not letting them pile up is most of what “management” means.
Can we make the changes ourselves instead?
Yes — you hold the same administrator access we do, and the Mad Libs layer above is yours to use. Plenty of clients start out doing their own updates, which is, frankly, less work for us. Most drift toward sending an email instead. Either way is fine, and nothing about the arrangement changes.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. Management bills monthly or annually — annual is a little cheaper — and you can walk whenever you like, taking the website, the backups, and every credential with you. We’d rather earn the renewal than write a clause for it.
