Overview

Web Design & Development Project Overview

Thorpe came to us as three companies with three websites — Thorpe Industries, Metro Roofing & Sheet Metal, and the Thorpe Group — and a plan to build all three. Partway through, the plan changed. What shipped is one site for one company, working across four offices in Western Canada on membrane roofing, metal roofing, architectural wall systems, windows and glazing, waterproofing, and the repairs and maintenance that follow all of it.

Every service got its own page, because that is how people search — nobody types “building envelope contractor,” they type the thing on their roof. Completed work is organised as projects rather than a photo gallery, covering schools, hospitals, industrial facilities and airports, so a general contractor can check whether Thorpe has done their building type before. Qualifications, certifications and safety sit together, in the place somebody vetting a bidder goes looking. The backend is built so Thorpe’s own people keep it current, and everything underneath it — the server, the nightly copies, the watching — is ours.

Deep Dive

What actually went into Thorpe’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

Three websites became one, halfway through

The signed scope was three separate sites — Thorpe Industries, Metro Roofing & Sheet Metal, and the Thorpe Group — each with its own structure and its own launch. Partway in, the company decided it was one company. That is a harder change to absorb than it sounds, because the content had been organised three ways. It became one site, one brand, and one set of services, without the schedule coming apart.

    Nobody searches for "building envelope"

Membrane roofing. Metal roofing. Architectural wall systems. Windows, glazing and glass. Waterproofing. Repairs and maintenance. Each is its own page, and the reason is not tidiness — it's that the person with a problem searches for the problem. They do not know the industry's collective noun for what Thorpe does, and they should not have to learn it to find the right page.

Projects are references, not a photo gallery

Schools, hospitals, industrial facilities, airports. In commercial construction, the useful question is not whether the work looks good in a photograph — it's whether this contractor has done a building like mine before. So finished work is structured as projects with the detail attached, and a general contractor can answer that question themselves instead of phoning to ask.

Four offices, one question to answer

A contractor working across Western Canada gets asked "do you cover us?" constantly, and a footer address does not answer it. Where We Work earns a place in the main menu rather than a line on the contact page, because coverage is a qualifying question — the sort a visitor needs settled before anything else on the site is worth their time.

Built so the crew that knows the work can update it

Projects finish, certifications renew, and job postings come and go — all of it faster than anyone wants to email about. The backend is a hand-built WordPress setup where adding a project or updating a certification is filling in fields, so the people who know what happened on a job are the ones putting it on the site. Anything structural is still ours to handle, and lands the same day.

In their words
James T. — Thorpe★★★★★

We hired Becker Design & Media Group to develop our new website and could not be happier with the result. We initially started with multiple websites for 3 different companies, and through the process we changed the structure and incorporated all sites into one, and Bryn handled the change in stride. He is not only capable but also very informative and thorough. The site exceeds our expectations but the process of working with Bryn was also simpler and more enjoyable than I had expected designing a new website would be. I highly recommend utilizing Bryn for your next project.
