Web Design & Development Project Overview

Vern’s Pizza has been selling the Original Thick since long before anybody worried about how it looked on a phone, and now runs eleven stores across seven cities in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. A pizza chain’s website has one job on a Friday evening, and it is not brand-building — somebody is hungry, deciding between you and the other place, and every extra step between that thought and an order is a chance to lose them.

So the whole site is four things: the menu, the deals, the locations, and ordering. Photography does the persuading, because pizza sells itself if you shoot it properly and gets no help from adjectives. Deals and featured items are straightforward for the team to change, since a promotion nobody can update is a promotion that stops running. Vern’s hosts the site on their own infrastructure; we built it, advised on the setup, and remain on hand when something needs doing.

Deep Dive

What actually went into Vern’s Pizza’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

Seven cities, three provinces, one question

Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Martensville, Calgary, Lloydminster, Winnipeg. Every one of those is somebody typing "pizza near me" and needing the nearest Vern's, not the head office. Locations is a top-level item and each restaurant is findable on its own terms, because a chain that makes you work out which branch is yours has already lost to the one that didn't.

A deal nobody can update is a deal that dies

Featured items and promotions change constantly, and the fastest way to kill that is to make each change a request that goes to a web developer and comes back on Tuesday. Deals and featured items are fields the team edits themselves, in minutes, from the back end — which is the difference between a promotions section that runs all year and one that quietly stops being touched.

    The photography does the selling

Nobody has ever been persuaded to order a pizza by a paragraph. The build was planned around proper food photography from the start — including a recommendation to hire a Saskatoon photographer who shoots food specifically, and a shot list to brief them with. Everything else on the page is arranged to stay out of the picture's way and put an order button next to it.

Hosted on their own servers, and said out loud

Almost every site in this portfolio sits on our infrastructure. This one doesn't — Vern's runs it on their own, and that was their call. We built the site, advised on the server setup and the configuration, and stayed available for the things that come up. It is worth saying plainly rather than implying an arrangement that isn't there.
