Web Design & Development Project Overview

Wardell Gillis was a full-service Saskatoon firm running on Wix when we took it on in 2022, and the first deliverable was not design at all — it was working out whether the domain was even registered and configured properly, which on a Wix-era small-firm site is a question worth asking before anything else.

What replaced it was built around one relationship: lawyers and the work they do, wired both ways. Each area of practice listed every lawyer who handled it; each lawyer’s page listed every area they worked in, alongside their biography, credentials, contact details and their assistant’s. Both directories were searchable and filterable. A careers page carried openings for lawyers, staff and law students. The firm has since rebranded and moved to a different website, so what is described here is the site as we built it.

Check the domain before you design anything
The original scope carried a line about assessing the domain and the platform it sat on — who held the registration, how it was configured, whether anything was about to lapse. Unglamorous, and the reason projects like this occasionally stall for three weeks in the middle. Better to find out in week one than the night before launch.

Wire the lawyers to the work, both directions
Every area of law named the lawyers handling it, and every lawyer named the areas they handled. Maintained once, correct in both places forever. Firms usually keep two separate lists that disagree with each other by the following spring, and nobody notices until a client phones the wrong person about the wrong thing.

The assistant's number belongs on the page
Lawyer pages carried the assistant's contact details next to the lawyer's, which sounds like a small thing until you have tried to reach a litigator during a trial. The person who can actually book the meeting is often not the person on the letterhead, and a site that admits this saves everybody a week.
