Overview

Web Design & Development Project Overview

Northern Strands is the oldest company in the NSGC family and the one most people mean when they say the name — over fifty years of mining wire rope, rigging and hoisting equipment, fall protection, suspended access and the training that goes with all of it. The website has to serve a mine planner specifying rope, a safety officer booking a course, and a contractor trying to find the nearest dealer, without any of them wading through the other two.

We built it around those separate errands. Products and services are structured apart from one another, training runs on a live calendar of upcoming courses, a set of rigging calculators is one click from the homepage for people doing the arithmetic on site, and Where to Buy routes dealers and distributors away from the retail path. It is one of six sites we run for the group, all sharing a design language and cross-linking to each other, and it sits on a server we run, with a nightly backup and a person who answers the same day.

Calculators, in the main navigation
Most industrial sites bury their tools three levels down under Resources. Northern Strands' rigging calculators are one click from anywhere, sharing the main menu with Products and Training, because the person who needs them is standing on a site with a phone in one hand working out whether a sling will take the load. Putting them behind a menu they'd have to go hunting through would have been the same as not having them.

A training calendar, not a training page
Courses have dates, and dates go stale. Rather than a static page somebody has to remember to edit, the training section runs on a calendar of upcoming courses the team updates themselves as the schedule fills in. Reference materials and downloadable guides hang off the same section, so a safety officer can check what's running and take away the handout in one visit.

Buyers and dealers want different doors
Somebody researching mining wire rope and somebody looking for their nearest distributor are at completely different points, and mixing them costs you both. The site separates them: Products for the specification work, Where to Buy for the people who already know what they want and need to find who stocks it locally. Two routes, two intents, neither one getting in the other's way.

Fifty years of catalogue is a structure problem
Mining wire rope, industrial rigging, fabricated products, fall protection, suspended access, Bin Safe, shaft sinking, field and mining services. Half a century of a company saying yes leaves you with a range that resists a tidy menu. The work was deciding what counts as a product and what counts as a service — and holding that line, so the next thing the company adds has an obvious place to go.

One set of hands across the group
Northern Strands is one of the websites we run across the NSGC group, and they are managed as a set rather than as separate arrangements — same hosting, same backup regime, same person to email. When something needs changing across the family, it gets changed across the family. Every one of them copies itself to three separate places nightly, and nothing is updated until that copy has succeeded.
