Overview

Web Design & Development Project Overview

Northern Strands’ Manitoba operation sells and services the equipment that keeps people from falling — harnesses, lifelines, anchors, rigid rails, swing stages and the material handling gear that goes with them — and trains the crews who use it, out of Keewatin Street in Winnipeg. It needed its own site rather than a page on the Saskatchewan one, because a Winnipeg safety manager searching for working-at-heights training is not going to find what they need on a Saskatoon company’s website.

So the site lives at workingfromheights.ca, and is organised around the four things the operation actually does: fall protection, suspended access, material handling, and training. The training section runs on the certified courses delivered in partnership with Safe Work Manitoba, with a route to book. Product browsing hands off to the group’s existing store rather than duplicating it. It carries the NSGC design language, links back to the rest of the family, and sits on the same watched hosting as its five siblings — nightly copies, and the same person answering in both provinces.

Deep Dive

What actually went into Northern Strands Winnipeg’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

    The domain is the strategy

This site does not live at a company name. It lives at workingfromheights.ca, which is what the job is called by the people who need it done — the safety manager with a crew going up next month is searching for the work, not for a supplier they have not heard of yet. Choosing the domain that matches the search is a decision made once, before anything is built, and it cannot be retrofitted.

Training that has to be the province's training

Fall arrest certification is a regulated thing, and a course only counts if it's the recognised one. The training section is built around the certified courses delivered in partnership with Safe Work Manitoba, with the route to book kept short — because somebody landing there usually has a crew, a date, and a compliance deadline already in hand.

    One storefront, two front doors

Manitoba and Saskatchewan sell much of the same gear, and building a second store would have meant two inventories, two sets of prices and two chances to be out of date. Product browsing here hands off to the group's existing store instead. The regional sites stay about the regional operation — location, courses, people — and the catalogue stays in one place, correct.

A regional arm that isn't a regional page

The easy version of this is a Locations page on the parent site. It's cheaper and it doesn't work: a Manitoba buyer wants a Manitoba address, Manitoba training dates and a local phone number, not a province filter. This is a full site for a regional operation, run under the same hosting and support arrangement as the rest of the family so it doesn't become somebody's forgotten side project.
