WordPress Design

Anyone can say "custom website." Here's what we mean by it.

No pre-made theme, no rented template, no page-builder kit wearing your logo. Every Becker Design website starts as a blank file and becomes a design drawn around one business — yours — by the same person who'll still be looking after it years from now.

The Definition

Hand-built, and built for exactly one client

The formula we’ve put in writing for over a decade of proposals: a hand-built, fully bespoke WordPress Content Management System (CMS) backend installation and 100% custom front-end design. In practice that means two things get made for you and nobody else. The front end — everything a visitor sees — is designed around your content, your customers, and the way your business actually gets found. The back end is a management toolkit shaped to your business: your services, your people, your projects, each with its own place to live and its own page on the site.

We’ve designed and developed hundreds of websites this way since 2012, and the reason we still work this way is unglamorous: websites built around their content are easier to find, easier to update, and easier to live with. The pretty part is real, but it’s the smallest part.

Structure First

The design work you can't see decides the design work you can

Before anything gets a colour, we map what the site holds: every service you offer, every person on your team, every project worth showing — and how each of those connects to the others. A visitor reading about one service should meet the projects that prove it and the page that explains what it costs to keep going. That cross-linking isn’t decoration; it’s how people actually navigate, and it’s a large part of how Google decides you’re worth showing to searchers.

It’s also how the site stays sane to update. When your next hire, next service, or next project has a place waiting for it, adding it takes minutes and comes out looking right. The management side of the practice is built on that promise, and it starts here, at the design stage.

What You Won't Get

No gimmicks. That's a design decision too.

You won’t get a homepage slider, for one. Studies keep showing what we’ve watched for years: when a slider starts rotating, people’s brains turn off — and the visitor who finally spots something interesting watches it slide away before they can click. We’d rather show your best material in a way that holds still long enough to work.

Same goes for scroll-jacking animations, autoplaying soundtracks, and stock photos pretending to be your team. A design earns its keep by making you look like your business at its best and then getting out of the way. Restraint reads as confidence — on a website the same as in a showroom.

Built to Last

A design should outlive the trends it ignored

Our median build takes about eleven weeks, and what comes out the other end is meant to stand the test of time — current clients are running on designs we drew years ago that still look sharp, because they were drawn around the business instead of around that season’s fashions. When Vern’s Pizza wanted a website as loaded as their famous Original Thick pizzas, we let the food photography do the talking and kept the design out of its way; it hasn’t aged because appetite doesn’t. When Deb Murdoch of DM Mortgage arrived knowing exactly how she wanted to be represented, the job was to nail that vision precisely — her word for the result, not ours.

And when the day comes that your business outgrows the design, it gets redrawn — by us or by anyone you choose, because you own the website outright: all the code, all the assets, all the everything.

Sizing It Up

Bring us the business, not a brief

You don't need a sitemap, a mood board, or a single decision made. Tell us what your business does and who you're trying to reach, and we'll come back with a proposal that lays out the features, specifications, and costs plainly. Nothing is set in stone — if we goof anything up, we fix the proposal until it fits.

The standing arrangement

  • Patrick T. — Valley Zipline Adventures★★★★★

Where do I begin. When I decided to renew my business website after ten years, I vetted about a dozen different developers. Bryn stood out from them all and our consultation was extremely thorough and the quote included everything we discussed. I would hands down recommend Becker Design for your next website build. He was easy to work with, kept clear communication and updated me every step of the way. Our new website is exactly what I needed for my business and I don’t regret my decision with work with them whatsoever. Thanks for everything Bryn!

  • Jaymond S. — Axiom Industries★★★★★

The entire experience of developing a website with Bryn has been nothing short of great.

We actually had a website previously, but we opted to develop a new and improved website through Bryn due to a number of reasons. Needless to say, Bryn took everything we liked about our old website and just made everything better. The new website looks better, is much faster, and super easy to make any changes in WordPress. This all has to do with how Bryn built the website. I don’t know a lot about website design, but everything is built from the ground up in a way that just “works” and can easily be built upon. Additionally, we have fully control over the website, so 90% of any additions or changes we want to make to the website, we can do with ease. As for the other 10%, Bryn is super fast. If we email him with a change we want made, it has been fixed within minutes.

On top of this, we had a whole laundry list of things we wanted for this website. He took each of these suggestions and implemented every one. He would also provide his own expertise and let us know his personal recommendations, but everything was always up to our discretion. For how big this project was, it was shocking how smooth and how quickly everything went.

Bryn is also very responsive. Anytime we had a little bug we wanted fixed or had any questions he usually would respond within 30 minutes, and any bug was fixed within the hour.

I would recommend Bryn to any company looking to build a website. Bryn has surpassed our expectations. We have received nothing but compliments on our website. From the entire Axiom team, thank you Bryn!

FAQ

Three questions we hear at the first meeting

  • How long does a website take to build?

Our median turnaround over the last three years is about eleven weeks, start to launch. Simple sites go faster; complicated ones take longer; the biggest variable is honestly how quickly the content — your photos, your service details, your story — comes together. When there’s a hard deadline, we can move quicker; we’ll tell you plainly what that takes.

  • What do you need from us to start?

A conversation, mostly. From there we set up a shared document for the written content and a spreadsheet that becomes the site’s map, and we’ll tell you exactly which details to fill in — the specifics of your services, your team, your projects. We reshape, expand, and polish everything from there. You review it all before it goes anywhere.

  • Will we be able to update the website ourselves?

Yes. Your content — text, photos, team, projects — is yours to edit, and the design isn’t something you can wreck by trying. You hold the same administrator access we do. In practice most clients discover they’d rather email us the change and get on with their day.

First Step

Tell us what you do

That's the whole ask. Tell us about the business, the customers you want more of, and what the current website is or isn't doing about it. We'll take it from there and come back with a plan you can actually evaluate.
