Web Design & Development Project Overview

Cuelenaere LLP is one of Saskatoon’s long-established law firms, and this is the second website we have built for them. A firm practising across sixteen areas of law has a structural problem most businesses do not: every lawyer works in several of those areas, every area is worked by several lawyers, and any article worth publishing belongs to at least one of each. Maintained by hand, that is three lists that drift apart within a year.

So none of it is maintained by hand. Lawyers, practice areas and articles are separate records that reference each other, and every list on the site is generated from those relationships rather than typed twice. Add a lawyer, tick the areas they practise in, and they appear on each of those pages — and those pages appear on their profile — without anyone editing a page. Sixteen practice areas each get a real page of their own, an Insights section carries the firm’s writing, and the server underneath is one of ours, backed up nightly and watched.

Deep Dive

What actually went into Cuelenaere LLP’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

Sixteen practice areas is sixteen front doors

Almost nobody looks for a law firm. They look for help with a foreclosure, or a will, or an injury claim, and the firm is what they find at the end of it. Sixteen areas of law means sixteen distinct problems people are already searching for, and each one has a page of its own that can answer the question in that visitor's own words rather than the firm's.

Three lists that would have drifted apart

Lawyers belong to practice areas. Practice areas contain lawyers. Articles belong to both. Maintained as three separate hand-typed lists, they stay accurate for about a year. Here they are one set of relationships: connect a lawyer to an area once, and both pages update. Nobody has to remember the other two places a change needed making, because there are no other places.

A directory, because people arrive with a name

Half the traffic to a law firm's people section is somebody who was given a name and told to call them. That visitor does not want to browse a practice-area page — they want to find one person, fast. So the firm's people are reachable both ways: through the area of law for visitors who don't know who they need, and through a plain directory for visitors who do.

Writing that stays attached to the work

An Insights piece about a change in family law is worth more sitting on the family law page than buried in a reverse-chronological blog nobody scrolls. Articles connect to the practice areas they concern, so the firm's writing accumulates where the relevant visitor already is, and a page that would otherwise be static gets steadily more useful the longer the firm publishes.

The second website, not the first

This is not the first site we built for Cuelenaere, which changes what the job is. The brief was not to introduce a firm nobody had heard of — it was to keep everything that had been earned and rebuild the structure underneath it. That is a more careful project than a first website, and a more nervous one, because there is something real to lose.

In their words
Richard C. — Cuelenaere LLP★★★★★

Our firm recently finished working with Bryn Becker of Becker Design & Media to modernize our very out of date website. Bryn developed a design and plan for us and implemented it in very short time for the nature of the project. He was always helpful, quick to respond and a pleasure to work. We are very happy with his work. Highly recommended!
