Overview

Web Design & Development Project Overview

Shifting Ground is a four-year, SSHRC-funded research-creation project about energy, community and geography in the North — ten artists and researchers working across disciplines that don’t normally share a bibliography, let alone a website. A project like that has to publish like a journal and look like an exhibition, and those two instincts pull in opposite directions.

The site holds both. Each of the ten researchers gets their own page. Thirteen exhibitions and projects are documented with installation photography rather than summarised in a list. Five recorded conversations sit in their own section, and the resource library runs to twenty-seven items — video, reading, downloadable documents — which is the part another researcher or a graduate student actually arrives for. Events, press and conference appearances are assembled by hand instead of scraped from a feed, because in academic work the distinction between a talk and a publication and a show matters and a calendar plugin flattens all three.

It’s built entirely on pages, deliberately. A four-year project changes shape every year — a new strand, a new partner, a form of output nobody planned for — and pages bend where a rigid content model has to be rebuilt. Not every site needs a custom post type. This one needed room.

Deep Dive

What actually went into Shifting Ground’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

Built out of pages, on purpose

There is not a custom post type anywhere on this site, and that is a decision rather than an oversight. A four-year research project grows a new strand every year — a partner nobody planned for, a kind of output that doesn't fit the shape agreed in year one. Pages bend around that. A rigid content model has to be rebuilt around it.

The library is what people come for

Twenty-seven items — recorded video, reading, documents to download — gathered in one place. On a research project this is the part that keeps working after the exhibitions come down, because it is what a graduate student finds at two in the morning three years later. Everything else here describes the work. This section hands it over.

Ten researchers, ten pages, no grid

Artists and academics working across the North, each given a page rather than a headshot in a row of twelve. In a collaboration between disciplines that don't normally share a bibliography, the individual is the unit people are actually looking for — somebody usually arrives having read one name, not the project.

In their words
Tomas B. — Shifting Ground★★★★★

I have worked with Becker Design for longer than I can remember, and Bryn has built more websites for me in that time than I care to admit. Accommodating, professional, and consistently on point, I couldn’t recommend Becker Design enough.
