On the day a record comes out, a musician’s website has about one job: get the person who arrived to the thing that plays. Everything else on it is in the way. Contrafact — Connor Newton, out of Saskatoon, working somewhere between hip hop and jazz — got a site built around that single moment.
It’s one page. Stream the single, buy the record on Bandcamp, take the press kit, see the track list and the players who made it. No blog nobody would maintain, no news section that would sit at eight months old, no content model to feed. An independent artist’s honest reality is that the music is released in bursts and the website has to look current in the gaps, and the way you get that is by having less of it.
The website was one part of a larger run of work with Connor that also took in live performance video, music videos and interview shoots — the kind of project where the footage and the site get built for each other instead of one being handed the other’s leftovers.
