Overview

Web Design & Development Project Overview

Prairie Diagnostic Services is Saskatchewan’s veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Its customers are veterinary clinics, not the public, and what they need from the website is narrow and constant: which test to order, what sample it needs, what it costs, and where the form is. The old site technically held all of that, but it had a content management system that rendered the same submitted font at three different sizes for reasons nobody could explain, so the lab’s staff had given up and started posting information as PDFs instead. The information was there. It just wasn’t on the web in any useful sense.

We rebuilt the site so that pages are pages again, and so the test catalogue could come in from the system PDS already had. Every test is now a page in its own right, pulled in from the lab’s own feed and refreshed on a schedule, and every test can be found by species or by lab section — bacteriology, virology, serology, parasitology, histology, cytology, toxicology and the rest. Submission forms stayed as downloadable PDFs, because that is genuinely what a form should be, and they are sorted by species so nobody hunts. The client portal PDS built in-house was left alone and linked to. Hosting, backups, monitoring and same-day help are ours to worry about rather than the lab’s.

Deep Dive

What actually went into PDS Inc’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

Why a diagnostic lab was publishing PDFs

Everything went up as a PDF, and it wasn't laziness. Submit a page in twelve-point type and the old system would render parts of it at twenty and parts at eight, with no explanation and no fix. Staff worked around it the only way they could: make the document somewhere else, upload it, link to it. Rebuilding the site meant that problem simply stopped existing, and the information could go back to being pages.

A test catalogue the lab already had

PDS had built its own service that publishes the current test list, and it worked. The job wasn't to replace it — it was to let the website read from it. Around nine hundred and fifty tests now come in on a schedule and land as individual pages, each with its own sample requirements and turnaround. Nobody at the lab retypes a test list into a website again.

Findable by species, and by the bench that runs it

A vet doesn't search the way a lab files. So every test is reachable two ways: by the animal it's for, across thirty-seven species from bovine and equine through to bison, llama, wild boar, honey bee and muskoxen, and by the section that runs it — bacteriology, virology, serology, parasitology, endocrine, genomics, toxicology, histology, cytology and clinical pathology. Each of those is a real page Google can index, not a filter that vanishes when you reload.

The parts we deliberately didn't rebuild

Two things were left alone on purpose. The web client portal, where vets order testing and read their results, was written in-house and works — so the new site links to it and stays out of its way. And the submission forms stayed as downloadable PDFs, because a form a clinic prints and sends with a sample is genuinely a document, not a web page. They're just sorted by species now.

A site clinics use on a working day

This isn't a brochure that can be down for an afternoon without anyone minding. Vets are on it mid-appointment, checking whether a sample needs serum or whole blood before the animal leaves. It sits on our managed hosting with daily backups to three separate places, monitoring that tells us before anyone at the lab notices, and support that answers the same day.
