Web Design & Development Project Overview

ResearchFDI is a Montreal consultancy that helps economic development agencies attract foreign investment — a business whose entire credibility rests on published evidence. Case studies, white papers, podcasts, articles, recorded wins. All of it existed. Almost none of it was findable, because the previous site had been built in a page builder that stored the content as display code rather than as data.

Getting it out was the job. Every piece of it was lifted out manually where it had to be, then rebuilt on custom fields and the standard editor so the material is data again rather than markup. Then it was sorted by kind: case studies, white papers, podcasts and articles are separate content types with separate templates, because a case study converts differently from a podcast and had been rendering as though it did not. Thirty-three case studies now run on their own template. Every service is written up on its own, FDI365 among them with its client portal, and the whole library sits behind search and filters.

Deep Dive

What actually went into ResearchFDI’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

Getting the writing back out of the page builder

Years of research had been typed into a page builder that stored it as layout instructions. The words were on the site and nowhere else — not in fields, not reusable, not portable. Extracting it, in places by hand, and putting it back as structured data was most of the budget and all of the value. What is stored properly can be moved again.

A white paper is not a blog post

Case studies, white papers, podcasts and articles had all been living as one undifferentiated stream. They are four different things: one proves a result, one demonstrates expertise, one is listened to, one is read on a phone. Each became its own content type with its own template, so each is indexed as what it is instead of as a generic post.

    Thirty-three pieces of evidence

Investment attraction is sold on proof: this agency, this campaign, this outcome. Thirty-three case studies now sit on a template built for that shape, filterable alongside the rest of the library. When a consultancy's product is credibility, the case studies are not marketing collateral hung off the side of the site. They are the inventory.

A product living inside a services site

FDI365 is software, sold to the same people who buy the consulting, and it needed to be both a page that sells and a door that opens. It sits in the services structure like the rest of the practice, then hands off to its own login. One place to explain it, one place to sign in, and nobody has to guess which they need.
