Overview

Web Design & Development Project Overview

BuckingJam Palace is a house concert venue in Calgary, which means it runs on two economies at once. There’s the ticket, and there’s the smaller group of people who keep the room alive between shows. A website that only handles the first one leaves the organization funding itself by email.

It carries both. Upcoming shows and an archive of 129 events going back years — an archive that size does more work than nostalgia, because a booking history is what an agent or a funder asks to see. Fifty posts of news since 2018. And two entirely separate support structures, because a supporter club and a charitable donation are different legal animals and can’t share a form: one buys early access to tickets, the other is tax-receipted. Members get a private area with recorded sessions and webinars behind a login.

Every dollar that changes hands — tickets, memberships, donations — leaves the website and lands on Zeffy, a fundraising platform built for nonprofits. A small arts organization running its own payment stack is a liability nobody asked for. The rest is designed so a rotating group of volunteers can operate it without anybody phoning us first.

Deep Dive

What actually went into BuckingJam Palace’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

Two ways to belong, and they can't share a form

One membership buys early access to concert tickets. The other is a charitable donation, and a tax receipt follows it. Those are different legal animals, and folding them into a single signup would either lose the receipt or mislabel the ticket. Both structures live on the site separately, and each says plainly what it gets you.

    Every show is still addressable

A hundred and twenty-nine events going back years, a good number of the recent ones marked sold out. That archive does more work than nostalgia. An agent deciding whether to route an artist through Calgary and a funder deciding whether the room is real are asking the same question — who has actually played here — and the site answers it unprompted.

Money leaves the building on purpose

Tickets, memberships and donations are all handled by a specialist platform elsewhere, never on this website. A small arts organization that runs its own payment stack takes on a whole category of risk and obligation in exchange for a marginally smoother checkout. That trade isn't close. Let the specialists hold the card numbers.
