Overview

Web Design & Development Project Overview

The Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra is the city’s professional big band, and it runs a second ensemble alongside itself — the Saskatoon Youth Jazz Orchestra, with its own auditions, its own play-along programme and its own supporters. It also hosts the Kenny Wheeler Conference. That is three distinct things an audience might arrive for, on a season that changes completely every year.

The site is built around that churn: events and a season archive, news, artists and artistic direction, the youth orchestra as its own area rather than a subsection, and a Support Us section that lets somebody give to the senior band or the youth band specifically. Our work with the SJO also runs well past the website — concert posters, ad campaigns and publicity material are designed fresh each season to suit the programme, so the marketing and the site tell the same story rather than two adjacent ones.

Deep Dive

What actually went into Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

The work doesn't stop at the website

Most of this portfolio is websites. This one is a season's worth of design — concert posters, ad campaigns, publicity material, produced fresh for each programme rather than dropped into a template. It means the poster in a café window and the event page it drives people to were made by the same hand, in the same week, for the same concert. Very few organisations get that, and it shows.

A second orchestra, not a subsection

The Saskatoon Youth Jazz Orchestra has its own auditions, its own play-along programme and its own audience of teenagers and parents. Filed under About on the senior band's site, it would be effectively invisible to the people it is for. It gets its own entry in the main menu instead, so a fifteen-year-old saxophonist can find it without first understanding how the organisation is structured.

    Two bands, two donate buttons

Somebody moved to give after a youth concert wants their money going to the youth band, and a general donation form quietly loses that intention. Support Us separates giving to the senior orchestra from giving to the youth orchestra, with sponsorship as its own path again. Three motivations, three routes, none of them relying on a donor writing a note and hoping.

A season that empties out every year

Every concert in the calendar eventually becomes a concert that already happened, and the site spends part of each year with nothing upcoming to show. So past seasons are an archive rather than deletions — the record of what the band has played is worth more than an empty page — and putting a new season up is a job the organisation does itself, in an afternoon, without asking anyone.
