Overview

Web Design & Development Project Overview

Calories runs a kitchen, a dessert case and a bakery operation out of one building on Broadway, and only so much of that can be sold to people sitting at a table.

It has grown into something considerably bigger than a menu online: over two hundred items across twenty-nine categories, organised the way the kitchen sells rather than how a menu reads. Ready-to-eat, meal packages, family portions and cake by the slice sit under lunch and dinner. Desserts needed six categories of their own — cheesecakes and tortes, pies and tarts, cupcakes, crèmes and trifles, squares, cake by the slice — because that’s a bakery, not a dessert menu. Jams, breads, granola and gift boxes make up the retail shelf.

The thing that makes it work is the least visible: ordering cuts off at fixed times each day and pickup happens in two defined windows. A kitchen can only stage so many orders at once, and a store that takes an order it can’t fill on time has done the restaurant a disservice, not a favour. There are dedicated sections for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day, which in this business are not four ordinary weeks.

Deep Dive

What actually went into Calories Online Ordering’s build, decision by decision — and the service behind each one.

Arranged the way the kitchen sells

Ready-to-eat, meal packages, family portions, cake by the slice. Then a dessert case needing six categories to itself — cheesecakes and tortes, pies and tarts, cupcakes, crèmes and trifles, squares. Then a retail shelf of jams, breads and granola. Over two hundred items across twenty-nine categories, filed the way the food is actually made and not the way a menu reads.

Ordering stops before the kitchen does

Orders close at set times each day and pickup happens in two defined windows. That constraint is the most important thing in the build and it is completely invisible. A kitchen can only stage so many bags at once, and a store that cheerfully accepts an order it cannot fill on time has done the restaurant harm, not a favour.

Four weeks a year that aren't like the others

Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Mother's Day each have a section of their own. In a bakery those are not ordinary weeks — they carry a meaningful share of the year, people search for them by name well in advance, and a page that has been sitting there since October is ranking by the time somebody needs it in December.
